ويس و رامين review Ë 103 ويس و رامينThis book is another one of my picks for “globalizing medieval studies” Basically if you want a good introductory list of texts from the medieval era that aren’t British I’d certainly suggest reading Vis and Ramin especially if you also like epics romances and poetryThings I Liked1 Story About a Female Character The introduction to my version of th

ويس و رامين review Ë 103 ويس و رامينVis and Ramin is not only a love story but a love poem to language Gorgani rolls out inventive metaphors to mirror multiple many nuanced perspectives on love loyalty and transience This can be exhilarating but also overwhelming For instance when Vis reproaches Ramin in a ten part letter There are some action scenes to contrast with the poetics of languishing though Watch for Vis's

ويس و رامين review Ë 103 ويس و رامينA romance in rhyming couplets Possibly the origin of the Tristan and Isolde story A bit annoying Then very annoying Eventually when I had my fill of cypress tears rose sherbet breasts etc I found myself wishing the cuckolded king would bring in assassins to strangle the lovers so I could move onto something else

ويس و رامين review Ë 103 ويس و رامينI don't remember any why I put this book into my reading list But every now and then I would have the urge to read classical literature stemming from outside of the Western World such as the Mahābhārata The Tibetan Book of the Dead and Shahnameh Vis and Rāmin is just another one of these books And I must say this was a very enjoyable read which was surprisingly unexpectedThe version I read was translated by Dick Davis who was also the translator of the version of Shahnameh two years ago This translation is written in pentameter couplets which provided a very rhythmic feel when one is reading it I couldn't help but use my fingers every now and then when I bump into a particular line that seemed off only to realise that the line indeed consists of ten syllables since I felt like I have been reading every line with a particular melo

ويس و رامين review Ë 103 ويس و رامينThough written by an 11th century Persian poet who lived in the empire of the Seljuk Turks the poem depicts a much older era the Parthian civilization of Pre Islamic Iran and tells of a romance that flouts what we might think of as traditional Islamic morality celebrating sex and wine and worldly pleasure It's written in a grand flowery style full of mixed metaphors and elaborate descriptions and long passionate speeches that might come across as archaic to contemporary readers but you have to read it as a document of its historical moment an example of non European courtly poetr

ويس و رامين review Ë 103 ويس و رامينAn epic story about two lovers’ hard fought battles through life’s obstacles to finally end up together Doesn’t conclude with the two Vis and Ramin ending up together but Gogani keeps writing until their deaths

ويس و رامين review Ë 103 ويس و رامينThis Persian epic is thought to have influenced both the story of Tristan and Isolde as well as the Troilus and Criseyde Dick Davis translates it wonderfully into English heroic couplets well retaining the imagery of the original
