Thomas R. Nevin ä 1 REVIEW R and documents her influence on Thereses autobiography and spirituality He charts the development of Therese's career as a writer He gives close attention to her poetry and plays usually dismissed as undistinguished and argues that they have great value as texts by which she addressed and informed her Carmelite community He delves into the French medical literature of the time in an effort to understand how the tuberculosis of which she died at the age of was treated and lamentably mistreated Finally he offers a new understanding of Therese as a theologian for whom love rather than doctrines and creeds was the paramount value Adding substantially to our knowledge and appreciation of this immensely popular and attractive figure this book should appeal to many general readers as well as to scholars and students of modern Catholic histor.

REVIEW ↠ Therese of Lisieux God's Gentle Warrior Therese of Lisieux God's Gentle WarriorLet me state from the outset that I am not and have never been a Catholic However I have read everything Therese of Lisieux wrote correspondence as well as memoirs and the Derniers Entretiens several times often in the original French since I first stumbled across The Story of a Soul in a bookstore in 1992 Since then the books I refer to as The Therese Collection have come to occupy a shelf of their own and I was interested to rea

REVIEW ↠ Therese of Lisieux God's Gentle Warrior Therese of Lisieux God's Gentle WarriorNevin includes sources I haven't encountered before in books about Therese including the texts of the circulaires multi page obituary notices sent to all the Carmelite convents on the death of a sister in any of them and his thesis that the uniueness and greatness of Therese is shown in her eating at the table of sinners in the last months of her life during which she experienced a great trial of faith I can't give him 5 stars though because his sometimes uirky style got in the way of his message at times And in choosing a thematic rather than a chronological approach he was forced to repeat himself a bit But on the whole an excellent read

REVIEW ↠ Therese of Lisieux God's Gentle Warrior Therese of Lisieux God's Gentle WarriorI've loved St Therese since I read about her when I was 7 years old I have read her autobiography multiple times and several devotional books based around her journal and theology This is the first book that made me see her from the perspective of the 21st century It is both a biography and a history of late 19th century France If you haven't read much about St Therese you should not start with this book because he makes many references that might not make sense without already knowing her lifeNevin takes multiple sources from French philosophy theology and medicine to give us a fuller picture of St Therese's world The first half of the book is devoted to the context of her life French Catholicism was a bit battered but her region and family were known for their devotion Her mother and father were each serious in business He dwells on her parents particularly her mother who lost several children to early childhood diseases In

REVIEW ↠ Therese of Lisieux God's Gentle Warrior Therese of Lisieux God's Gentle WarriorNevin effectively cuts through any lingering critical sentimentality about Therese His contextual chapters are excellent and his discussion of Therese as a writer is extremely interesting too I disagree with his criticism of Therese's poetic contemporaries such as Hopkins who had his own anguish to contend with but his analysis of Therese's own texts is really insightful Nevin's work doesn't make Therese's brief life less poignant than the many previous presentations of her but he writes with a welcome freshness and directness; one of the best books I've read on
