Physics in MindUtterly familiar and bewilderingly mysterious that we call awareness or consciousness In Physics in Mind eminent biophysicist Werner R Loewenstein argues that to answer these uestions we must first understand the physical mechanisms that underlie the workings of the mind And so begins an exhilarating journey along the sensory data stream of the brain which shows how our most complex organ processes the vast amounts of information coming in through our senses to create a coherent meaningful picture of the world Bringing information theory to bear on recent advances in the neurosciences Loewenstein revea.

Ls a web of immense computational power inside the brain He introduces the revolutionary idea that uantum mechanics could be fundamental to how our minds almost instantaneously deal with staggering amounts of information as in the case of the information streaming through our eyes Combining cutting edge research in neuroscience and physics Loewenstein presents an ambitious hypothesis about the parallel processing of sensory information that is the heart hub and pivot of the cognitive brain Wide ranging and brimming with insight Physics in Mind breaks new ground in our understanding of how the mind works..

Physics in Mind characters ´ 5 Physics in MindHot damn this is a big brain book Loewenstein writes in the preface that his book is written for the general reader and that no specialized knowledge of biology physics or information theory is assumed in advance But that's just

Physics in Mind characters ´ 5 Physics in MindThis book was highly disappointing Many reviews say that the problem is the science is difficult Actually the problem is simply that the author is a bad writer who thinks he is a poet and who has chosen to write flowery obfuscating prose rather than clear illuminating summaries of the science involvedSeveral sections stand out as being particularly bad One entitiled An algorithm is no substitute for a demon apparently after consulting the references is intended to address flaws in intelligent design Even after re reading this section several times it is not all apparent what in the world Lowenstein is talking about and my best guess has him naively pointing out that intelligent desig

Physics in Mind characters ´ 5 Physics in MindNot a light read but absolutely with the effort I came across this book as I was looking for background reading for Rhythms of Brain This book does a great job of clarifying the role of uantum mechanics in biology providing key insights into the current research and the current movers in the

Physics in Mind characters ´ 5 Physics in MindThis is one of those books like The Elegant Universe or Godel Escher Bach that I know I'm going to have to read three or four times to even come close to comprehending the majority of it It's like a tough mudder for your brain but in a good way

Physics in Mind characters ´ 5 Physics in MindNot your standard pop sci entry Not that I don't appreciate a challenge but the author might have led a bit gently here and there closed a technical gap or two pandered a bit vigorously to his rapt lay readership OK I won't mince words this was a tough read Like another reviewer on this page who supplied the percentage yield on her grasp of its contents I'd put my own around 75% a 24% margin of error For all that I failed to make crystal clear sense of though there's a trove of fascinating material in this book I did and Loewenstein if not always the most lucid of guides is certainly an insightful one I could have done without a lot of his ticky verbalisms his tireso

Physics in Mind characters ´ 5 Physics in MindI enjoyed the book I liked how the author broke down the nervous system to its component parts and related each part to physics devices we know about It takes the computer metaphor of the mind and gives it flesh and bone detail at the level of physics and describes most of workings of the nervous system up to consciousness itself in terms of information processing by physical systems much like the processing that goes on in silicon chips circuit boards and computers I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a better understanding of why the computer metaphor of the brain is an apt one

Physics in Mind characters ´ 5 Physics in MindExtremely hard to read and follow Despite being fairly technical I found it very very hard to understand despite the authors initial claim that knowledge of science would not be reuired I wouldn't recommend this book to ANYONE

Physics in Mind characters ´ 5 Physics in MindThis book is challenging and the challenge is made even greater by the fact that literally none of the diagrams available in the physical copy is provided to audiobook listeners That being said even with the diagrams some of which can be y

Physics in Mind characters ´ 5 Physics in MindFascinating though slow going for a non physics personLike many of his ilk he wants to prove that it all comes down to physics ontologically and otherwise; but he is not as reductionist as one might expect given his physics background He takes as his exemplar

Physics in Mind characters ´ 5 Physics in Minduote No specialized knowledge of biology physics or information theory is assumed in advance With the general reader in mind Good luck with thatThis book is heavy on biologyphysics including uantum theory general reader will be lost uite fast Overall it's dry scientific book with few humorous lines between historical and biologic facts Still can be 'entertaining' for ones who'd like to get alternative view on brain
